Is Yoga a Religion

Yoga is said to be a path to god-realization, which is an odd sounding concept to the traditional Western views because if a person believes in a personal Divine being called God it would seem to be blasphemy to assert that one can become one with God. Indeed people have been put to death for making such claims in the past.

Mindful Meditation

Perhaps the most fundamental form of yogic meditation is through becoming a witness or observer. This is a practice which can be part of a meditation but it can also be practiced in day-to-day life. This makes you more mindful and awake in everything you do. Even the most routine things you do like getting ready in the morning and all your grooming can be done mindfully. In this way everything can become meditation.

Another important and useful form of yogic meditation is devotional. In this form of meditation you focus on your heart and soul center in your chest and the divine presence that lives there.

On Meditation

An article I read describing the experiences that long-term practitioners of meditation achieved shocked me! I had to read it several times to be sure I read it correctly. The article reported the results of a study conducted by world-renowned authorities on meditation. I’m sure the results of this study will shock you as well, as they are the total opposite of what I expected and what I think should be expected from a long-term meditation practice. I have to ask, “What are these advanced meditators doing while they are sitting in meditation presumably for hours every day?” You won’t believe your eyes when you read the quote.

This is the quote from an article in Yoga Journal, May-June, 2001, page 174.

The Yoga Of Mind Training

One of the first aspects of meditation is training the mind to be able to concentrate or focus. Without that the mind drifts or gets bored which leads a person to doze off or sleep. Concentration and focus are challenging because we are used to a great deal of stimulation in our day-to-day lives. If you watch TV or movies notice how quickly there are edits, changing camera angles and positions, and having the camera in motion.

Concentration and focus are challenging because we are used to a great deal of stimulation in our day-to-day lives. If you watch TV or movies notice how quickly there are edits, changing camera angles and positions, and having the camera in motion. This is quite intentional because most people have a very short attention span of only a few seconds. So movies and TV cater to that and the movies and TV in turn reinforce short attention span in people.
